Chicago Cubs' Tyler Colvin hospitalized after broken bat punctures chest
On Sunday afternoon, Tyler Colvin of the Chicago Cubs' upper left chest was punctured by a piece of bat while coming home from third to score on a double play. Colvin needed to be hospitalized because of a wound described as "fairly deep". A tube was inserted into Colvin's lung to prevent it from collapsing. This incident is sure to intensify debate over baseball's use of maple bats. You can go to this link and see a couple of pictures of the incident: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/Cubs-Tyler-Colvin-hospitalized-after-broken-bat?urn=mlb-270755

An interesting post (and unfortunate event). Be sure to connect the issue of maple bats to the health related consequences, such as the impact on injury rates. And also consider scholarly resources whenever possible. How is the player now? Hope he healed well!
ReplyDeleteI could not believe that when I saw it on espn the next morning. It just goes to show you that in the mlb that with the combination of 90mph fast balls and 85 to 90mph swing speed that nobody is safe. They thought medal bats are dangerous, wood can be just as bad. I think the mlb after incodence like that should serious consider changing the bats to more solid would like oak, maple or even a hard pine. There would be a lot less broken bats and it would minimize freak accidence and injuries like this one. What most people don't know is that the hole was only like 2 or 3 inches from his heart, which inturn almost killed him. He also was hospitalized and had a chest tube inserted to keep his lung from colapsing. It was for sure a crazy crazy accident.
ReplyDeleteThat's very disappointing to hear! There really is a risk though in every activity that you do. This is one of the first blogs I am reading about a horrific accident, but it's definitly something we have to continue to keep in mind. There is always risk for injury and it's good to have knowledge of injuries and how to treat accidents.
ReplyDeleteI remember this happening early on in the year and it was very scary to see a rookie in the league have this happen to him. Hopefully he will be able to bounce back and play the game he used to. A lot of players will have mental blocks afetr a serious injury or event that occured to them on the field.
ReplyDeleteThats very interesting. It is very unfortunate but I would think very rare. I don't watch much baseball but if I saw this I would be shocked. I think they should look into changing what wood the bats are made of because I have seen a lot of broken bats and some fly into the stands and hit people. I hope this baseball player was alright.
