Quinoa is a good option for vegetarians, vegans, and anyone interested in adding non meat proteins to their diets. Quinoa also boasts one of the highest levels of plant based iron levels. It's also an excellent source for magnesium, copper, phosphorus, fiber and it is naturally gluten free. Quinoa is at many grocery stores and it is available in a several colors. Lack of Sleep Linked to Risky Colon Polyps
I found this article very interesting because there are many people who don't get enough sleep that they need. People who slept less than six hours a night are more likely to have dangerous polyps in their colon or rectum compared to better rested patients, in one recent study. Polyps, progress to become cancerous tumors in about 10% of cases. As a result, they are considered to be precancerous polyps and a strong predictor of the disease. However, this is the first time anyone has ever found a link between sleep duration and risk of colorectal adenomas, and the findings need to be confirmed in other studies. the results indicate that people who don't sleep much at night might have the same chance for developing colorectal cancer as other high risk groups, such as people with a close relative who has been diagnosed with the disease. I also found this interesting statistic that the national Cancer Institute gave. More than 140,000 Americans will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer this year, and some 51,000 will die from the disease. Arthritis Drug Could Prevent Skin Cancers
I found this article interesting because the drug Celebrex cannot only help people with Arthritis but with Skin Cancer also. The arthritis drug has shown promise in preventing some of the most common skin cancers such as squamous cell carcinomas. These skin cancers are among the most common cancers in the U.S. More than 2 million new cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are seen every year. However, Celebrex have been linked to heart attacks and strokes. Celebrex is a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug similar to ibuprofen. Researches had given 240 people ages 37 to 87 who had precancerous skin lesions either Celebrex or a placebo for nine months, checking them for skin cancers every three months and then two months after the treatment ended. When the 11-month mark came, the people who took Celebrex had 50 to 60 percent fewer non-melanoma skin cancers. However, the study was stopped by the FDA because of the heart problems reported by the people. Other testing has been done and will be continuing to be tested. Regular Walking May Slow Decline of Alzheimer's
I came across this article on Alzheimer's and how walking about five miles a week may help slow the progression of cognitive illness among seniors already suffering from mild forms of cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's disease. There is an estimate of 2.4 million to 5.1 million people in the U.S. that are estimated to have Alzheimer's disease. They found that walking five miles per week protects the brain structure over ten years in people with Alzheimer's, especially in areas of the brain's key memory and learning centers. They also found that these people had a slower decline in memory loss over five years. Although walking is not a cure to Alzheimer's, it can improve your brain;s resistance to the disease and reduce memory loss over time. FDA Reviews 2 New Drugs to Reduce Prostate Cancer
I was searching around the Yahoo website and came to this article talking about how two companies might have new drugs which can help reduce prostate cancer. The two drugs from GlaxoSmithKline and Merck might reduce the risk of prostate cancer in men, though scientists questioned the drugs overall benefit. The reviewers for the Food and Drug Administration also complained that the companies only studied a small number of African American men, who are at high risk for prostate cancer. The company GlaxoSmithKline has asked the FDA to approve its drug Avodart for a new use against prostate cancer, after research showed a 23% reduction in low grade prostate tumors among men taking the drug. The company of Merck achieved similar ressults with its drug Proscar and is asking FDA to approve labeling about its drug's benefits in reducing prostate cancer risks. Both drugs are already approved to treat enlarged prostate. I think that this is great how there might be 2 new drugs which can help reduce prostate cancer in men. I was looking at this Health news on Yahoo and found out that many new things. There was a new survey that found that 20 percent of U.S. adults experienced mental illness in the past year. Overall, 4.8 percent suffered serious mental illness, 8.4 million people had serious thoughts of suicide, 2.2 million made suicide plans, and one million attempted suicide, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. About 20 percent of adults with mental illness in the past year also had a substance abuse disorder, the report found.
