Mental Illness Hit 1 in 5 U.S. Adults in Past Year
I was looking at this Health news on Yahoo and found out that many new things. There was a new survey that found that 20 percent of U.S. adults experienced mental illness in the past year. Overall, 4.8 percent suffered serious mental illness, 8.4 million people had serious thoughts of suicide, 2.2 million made suicide plans, and one million attempted suicide, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. About 20 percent of adults with mental illness in the past year also had a substance abuse disorder, the report found. I also found out that Mental illness is more common among jobless people than among those with full time jobs. Women are more likely than men to experience mental illness. Young adults had the highest rate of mental woes while those aged 50 and older had the lowest rate. Only 37.9 percent of adults with mental illness received mental health services. I found this article interesting and if you would like to explore it more, here is the link: http://news.yahoo.com/s/hsn/20101119/hl_hsn/mentalillnesshit1in5usadultsinpastyear

Wow I didn't know the statistics on that. It is very interesting but very sad that adults deal with that. Its just not adults, it could be young teens too. It is very sad because adults should not have to deal with that when they are having the stress of work and if they have a family they have to take care of!A lot of stress does come from there works though. Very intresting blog and hopefully adults can be less stressed out and they find something to cure for there mental illnesses.
ReplyDeleteIts somewhat scary to know how high the statistics are for people who have mental health issues and are not getting treated for them. The fact that so many people attempted suicide in the past year shows how little attention is being put on this subject. I personally know someone with a mental health issue and even though I have tried to convince her many times to seek help, she refuses. I feel as though she is embarrassed and that is the reason she does not want to talk to anyone else about her feelings. I think it is important for these numbers to be published and the topic to be discussed more often in hopes that if individuals know they are not alone, they may be more likely to seek help before turning to substance abuse or possibly something even worse.
