I was on the internet browsing around and came accross this ad on Spices. It's interesting because these spices can help improve many things for your health, energy, and longevity. I found out that Garlic wards off heart disease. The spicy favorite in Italian fare, has been shown to improve cholesterol and lower blood pressure. According to the national Health and Medical Research Council, consuming half to one clove of garlic daily may reduce cholestrol by nearly ten percent. Another spice is Cinnamon and it is usually thought of as the delicious spice in apple pie filling, but in other parts of the world, especially India and Asia, cinnamon has been used as a healing herb for centuries. Clinical studies have linked cinnamon consumption to lowered blood sugar. Both in vitro and human studies show improvement in insulin sensitivity with cinnamon polyphenols, as well as improvement in total and LDL cholestrol. Curry is another spice which seems to help joint health. Curry, a staple spice combo in Southeast Asian cuisine, contains turmeric, the yellow spice that gives curry its distinctive color. The active component in turmeric is called Curcumin. Patients with knee osteoarthiritis recieved either 800 mg per day ibuprofen or 2 grams per day Curcumin. Both groups showed improvement in pain on level walking and climbing stairs. The spice cardamom seems to improve energy. It is found in curries, rice dishes, herbal teas, and breads. Cardamom is the spice that gives chai tea its main flavor. In Asia, cardamom has long been valued medicinally for its ability to increase circulation and improve energy. Cumin is another spice which seems to boost immunity. An excellent addition to meat curries, stews, vegetables, seafood, and sauces, cumin is thought to boost the immune system and also to improve liver function, reduce flatulence, and aid in digestion. There are a couple of other interesting spices which help in many other different ways. I really enjoyed reading this post. I knew certain herbs were better for you, but I was unaware that garlic could help lower your risk for heart disease. Also it is great for people to know that curry can help joint pain. The aging population should pay attention to this because they have such a higher incidence of joint pain and injury. These are natural ways to help your body which is even better!
ReplyDeleteI just read the same article on yahoo. I found it very interesting. Some of the information I was aware of and some was new. I always look for this type of information to stay healthy, keep disease and/or illness at bay and/or cure ailments. My feeling is that most things must have a natural preventative or cure and I try to find it whenever possible. Thank you for the link. The gifts of nature are wonderful and generous. It also permits us to indulge slightly in some of the guilty pleasures of life with a bit less turmoil.
ReplyDeleteThis was a great post! I have heard about some of the benefits of having cinnamon before but was completely unaware about the many other spices. I did not know that garlic was great for decreasing chances of heart disease or that curry would help relieve pain. This is very interesting it would be great if all minor pain and injury could be solved using natural remedies rather than going straight for medicine. This is much healthier and less invasive to our health later on in life.
ReplyDeleteGood information. I love Chai tea, but I never knew what that main flavor was or that it was even healthy for you. I think it's interesting that all of these spices can improve your overall health in the most natural form. It's crazy that patients are either given an overwhelming amount of 800 mg per day ibuprofen or 2 grams per day Curcumin and both provide the same healing effects.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm going to have to learn how to make Chai tea so I can utilize the health benefits of Cardamom!
It is very interesting that something as little and as simple as a spice can help to improve your overall health and longevity. I love garlic and I was glad to hear that it has some health benefits. I was surprised that eating a half or a whole clove a day helped to reduce cholesterol. I do have high cholesterol that runs in my family so I guess I should start eating more garlic!
